about

At the time I wrote this song, I was commuting to college, working 2AM shifts at a local bakery, and doing landscaping work. I had burns on my arms from the bakery. I had numerous scratches along them previously from trimming a hedge of wild rose bushes on an estate along the Potomac. (I started landscaping at 14 and stopped at 23 and started bartending.) It had been a hard summer. I came home and wrote this song on my deck, stomping in bare feet. With rising student loans and the cost of living and being in college, I was stressed and burdened, as most of us are.

lyrics

my hands are in the dirt
my arms are scarred and burned
give you a dollar to knock me to my knees.
take the shirt off my back to stop you bleed
nothing quenches that bleeding thirst
bury me deep to hide and burrow
from the darkness outside
i can't help but fear tomorrow
when the blood is on the tide.

i said
hold

hold the line.

i said
hold

hold the line.

I said pay the man.
pay the man
PAY THE MAN!

I said here I am
here I am
there I am.

I can't cry anymore.

I said

pay the man.
